Think "hate crime" laws make sense? Take a look the quotes in this article regarding whether the act of displaying a Sarah Palin effigy in a noose might not be a hate crime, while doing the same to an Obama effigy would.
I realize that the quoted law enforcement officer doesn't offer his opinion either way, but the criteria that is explained, and the analysis that is required to do so, is a bit ... murky.

I could do an hour on hate crimes. The problem is the theory makes sense but in practice it's impossible.
Remember that great quote about pornography... "I can't describe it but I know it when I see it?"
Hate crimes are pretty much the exact opposite. "I can describe them perfectly, but I rarely know one when I see it."
So it's okay to hang a woman but it's not okay to hang a black man? What about a black woman? Would that be okay? I think I'll put a halloween display in my yard with Obama hanging from a tree. Think the ACLU would defend my right to free speech? Actually, I'll bet if I claimed to be a NAMBLA member as well, they just might.
